Summer Reading Frequently Asked Questions

What is Summer Reading 2024—Adventure Begins At Your Library?

Harford County Public Library’s Summer Reading Adventure 2024 begins Saturday, June 1 and ends Saturday, August 17. We offer kids, teens, and adults ways to stay active in mind and body all summer long, and set reading goals that allow children to earn prizes. We host free, fun activities at all of our branches that keep everyone learning and reading.

How does it work?

Get started by registering on ReadSquared. You will need to create a new account each year, even if you have participated in previous years. Once you have created your account and enrolled, you can pick up your registration goodies at your local HCPL branch, starting Saturday, June 1. This year, infants through teens entering 12th grade can pick up a summer coupon sheet- filled with offers from local businesses and a voucher to attend an IronBirds baseball game. All while supplies last.

Each time you read or listen to a book, log it on ReadSquared or on a paper log. Infants to PreK have a goal of reading 25 books. Children entering grade K-5 have a goal of reading 10 books. Children entering grade 6-12 have a goal of reading 3 books. Adults have a goal of reading 5 books.

Starting Monday, June 17 you can pick up your completion prize. For infant through entering 8th grade - a free book and for students entering 9th grade through entering 12th grade - either a Horizon movie ticket or a Wegman’s gift card. All while supplies last. You will also receive a certificate of completion.

Who can participate?

Infants, toddlers, preschoolers, children, teens, adults—everyone! Children who are too young to read by themselves can participate with an adult. Parents or caretakers are welcome to sign young children up and assist them with logging books.

What if I don’t have a library card?

Library cards are not required for participation. However, if you would like to get a Harford County Public Library card to access eBooks and more, get started with a Digital Library Card now! All HCPS students should have a digital library card linked to their school account. For more information, please consult our School Support Central page.
